David M. Quillen, MD

Dr. David M. Quillen is an associate professor in the department of community health and family medicine in the College of Medicine.  Dr. Quillen received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and history from Colby College and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his family medicine residency and teaching fellowship at Duke University in 1996.  He joined the UF faculty in 1998 as an assistant professor in the department of community health and family medicine in the College of Medicine.

Since coming to Florida, Dr. Quillen has had a variety of roles in community health and family medicine, the College of Medicine and the university.  His primary faculty role is that of a clinician educator.

Dr. Quillen’s clinical/educational time is centered with the family medicine residents on the inpatient medicine service and family medicine clinic on Main Street. Within the College of Medicine he does clinical teaching with medical students across all four years.  He also co-runs a lecture course with the medical honors program that focuses on the practical aspects of caring for patients.  

Administratively, Dr. Quillen works with UF Health Academic IT as the associate chief medical information officer and serves on a variety of committees at UF Health, Shands Hospital, College of Medicine and the Faculty Group Practice.

Dr. Quillen has served in several leadership roles at the College of Medicine faculty council (treasurer, president-elect, president and past president) and UF Faculty Senate (eight years as senator, Academic Policy Council member, Budget Council Chair and Steering Committee member).  He has also chaired the COM-FEO review committee since the inception of the program, serves on the Medical School Admissions Committee and administered the College of Medicine faculty evaluation of department chairs for three years.

Dr. Quillen’s goals for his year as senate chair and UF Trustee are as follows:

  • Maintain and expand collaborative communication with faculty and university leadership following the principles of shared governance.
  • Be the faculty voice with senior UF leadership and with the Board of Trustees.
  • Raise the important issue of faculty welfare (benefits, tenure and promotion, academic freedom, and a just work environment) with the Board of Trustees, senior UF leadership and faculty.
